from Lorna Inness, Elizabeth Riley, Roy Wattlington, Dietra Shurland, Brad Nugent, and
Jennifer Nugent-Hill.

Brief report on on-going activities
-
Report on the CZCP Workshop:
Paul DiGiacomo
opened the report by stating that the Puerto Rico workshop was much closer to
where we want to get than the previous two workshops. However, it still appears
challenging to bring the end users in. The workshop facilitated very good discussions,
and the challenge is in terms of the follow up. It appears difficult to identify tangible
and measurable outcomes of the workshop. Having recommendations is good, but there
is a need to have more follow up.
Michael Bruno
commented that this time, we did not have a parade of researchers. Rather there
were on the one side contributions by people delivering products and explaining them, and
on other side users describing how they are or would like to use these products.
Among the participants, there was very good representation of the region, with
good mix of users including the relevant industry. The workshop hit the nail on the head
in terms of the theme.
Hans-Peter Plag
pointed out that there were considerable cultural differences between the
individual workshops, and these differences need to be respected.
Robert Christian
asked what is needed in order to do to have successful observing systems. It was
emphasized that bringing in users from the start is a key issue.
Hans-Peter Plag
reminded that many of the workshop participants expressed the need to be able to
connect to experts when necessary.
Paul DiGiacomo
suggested that we set up a list with
experts and their fields. This was received as a good idea.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-7-2:
Hans-Peter Plag
will set up a list of CZCP experts and will ask all members of the
for information on what field(s) of expertize they would volunteer to be experts
for.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2011-05-31.
Robert Christian
informed that he heard about a network for science, which has been
developed be a person from Harvard University. He suggested that it may be
helpful to follow up on that.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-7-3:
Robert Christian
will send information of the network for science to
Hans-Peter Plag
for further
follow up.
Responsible:
Robert Christian,
Deadline:
2011-05-20.
-
Formation of an Ocean CoP:
Paul DiGiacomo
had no further information on the progress.
There was supposed to be a meeting soon. Jay Pearlman was most likely working on a
NSF proposal.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-7-4:
Paul DiGiacomo
will contact Jay Pearlman to get more information on the progress
concerning the Ocean CoP.
Responsible:
Paul DiGiacomo,
Deadline:
2011-05-20.
-
Participation in Delta Conference:
Robert Christian
informed that the meeting program of the conference was not in control of the CZ
It was highlighting observations while users were less represented. He mentioned that
Jimmy Adegoke
would be participating.
The meeting likely was a good opportunity to set the stage for a global delta network.
4
Session Proposal for 2012 Oceans Sciences Meeting
Hans-Peter Plag
pointed out that thematic session proposal for the 2012 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Salt Lake City, Feb. 20-24, 2012
can be submitted until May 16, 2011. Proposals can be submitted through
http://www.sgmeet.com/osm2012/sessionsubmit.htm
.
After some discussion, it was agreed that a proposal should be submitted. It was
emphasized that there should be sufficient time for discussion in the session
Action Item
CZCP-CG-7-5:
Paul DiGiacomo
will draft a session proposal for the 2012 Ocean Meeting and circulate it to the
Core Group.
Responsible:
Paul DiGiacomo,
Deadline:
2011-05-10.
Robert Christian
recommended to focus the session on a communication network for society
related to the coastal zone -
Michael Bruno
supported this idea.
Paul DiGiacomo
commented that
this could be used as a starting point for the session.
Hans-Peter Plag
wanted to see
indicators for the coastal zone state considered.
5
Participation in GEO AIP-4
Hans-Peter Plag
reported that a call for proposals for participation in the Architecture Implementation Pilot 4 (AIP-4)
has been published at
http://www.earthobservations.org/geoss_call_aip.shtml
.
He suggested that the Core Group considers to submit a proposal for the CZCP participation. Deadline for proposals was May 8, 2011
it was agreed to propose an activity related to the information system.
Action Item

Hans-Peter Plag
will prepare a proposal related to the CZCP information system for the
AIP-4 Call for proposals.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2011-05-7.
Robert Christian
suggested to focus on a social network analysis and expressed that
he would be willing help. Such a network would be a good avenue to faster collaboration.
6
CZCP Contribution to GEO Work Plan
Hans-Peter Plag
explained that a V0 draft GEO Work Plan for 2012-2015 was available
for comments. This draft would be
discussed in detail during the Work Plan Symposium, May 4-6, 2011, in Geneva. He pointed
out that the proposed organizational structure would be rather exclusive and
might make it very difficult for the CZCP (and any other CoP) to interact with GEO. He
concluded that it could be important
to engage in Task leading.
After some discussion, it was suggested to propose a CZCP-related task.
Action Item
CZCP-CG-7-7:
Hans-Peter Plag
will investigate whether a GEO Work Plan task related to the CZCP can be
proposed for inclusion in the GEO Work Plan.
Responsible:
Hans-Peter Plag,
Deadline:
2011-05-06.
7
CZCP Workshop in 2012
The initial theme for the workshop was announce at
http://www.czcp.org/workshops/Arctic
as
Climate Change in the Arctic: New Opportunities and Challenges for the Coastal Zones
.
There was consensus that this was a good start.
Paul DiGiacomo
requested that the
theme be made more specific.
Hans-Peter Plag
pointed out that the Steering Committee should
be established as soon as possible. It was suggested to invite
Pablo Clemente-Colon,
Yves Crevier,
Hans-Peter Plag,
Paul DiGiacomo,
Michael Bruno,
and someone from the European group.
Hans-Peter Plag
also suggested to aim for
a Russian member.
